Combination Techniques

In most self defense circumstances, a single punch or strike to your attacker probably wont be enough to end the situation. It is much more likely in a fight that you will need to throw out multiple techniques or combinations to stand any chance of successful self defense. In Polecat Martial Arts, we purposely train in combination sequences that work by counter attacking your opponent and taking down the opponent to the floor so we can get a firm grip on controlling, defusing or escaping the situation. Combinations should flow, your speed and technique will need to be correct in order for the combinations to work as intended. Don't worry about been rigid or robotic when practising and learning the combos but as you practise try to improve your technique to a fluid flowing one where all the techniques can quickly and easily be employed.

Random Combinations using all of the Polecat Strikes are ideal for quick combination training. For good practise, we train by alternating between all of the Striking techniques each in different orders to create multiple random combat combinations. This is a great excercise for leaning the strikes and increasing speed and stamina.

Combination 1

Martial Arts Combination Techniques

In this first combination, an elbow strike is used to attack a head level punch. The arm is then secured by employing an Eagle Claw grip on the wrist of the opponent while the 'closed' arm forming the elbow strike 'opens' into a kinfe hand or polecat hand strike to the neck of an opponent. Raising the opponents arm and striking in and down will create a small window allowing you to lower the opponent, stepping through at this point enables an arm bar lock on the opponent forcing them down the ground. Keeping the arm secure, the knee can then be dropped onto the opponents pinned arm to disarm the attacker.

Combination 2

MMA Combos for Self defense

In the second combination, the punch of an attacker is avoided and the attackers arm is 'brushed' aside. Immediatley a short stomach level punch is used to make the attacker purge forward. The arm that did the stomach level punch is now fired up to meet the chin of your attacker, stepping behind the opponent, this traps the attacker arm and allows an easy takedown with arm control. From this position the arm can then be used as a submission technique to control your attacker into defeat. Fast intuitive speed is needed here alongside good technique to employ the combination sequence in the proper application.

Combination 3

MMA Self Defence Grappling Arts

The third combination uses basic but slightly adapted karate techniques to counter attack and control an opponent. We block a punching opponent, attempt to break their arm, take them down and eventually smash their face in so they will not try to punch you again. The takedown comes from the motion of a Gedan Barai, usually a low sweeping block but like we have explained before in Polecat Martial Arts, blocks are not just used for blocking, they can also be used as strikes, takedowns and grappling application techniques once you know how to use them for that purpose. The wide karate stance of Kiba Dachi is used as a stumbling block to trip the attacker down to the ground. The faster you can pull this combo off, the more stuned an opponent would be when they finds themmselves on the floor wandering what just happened.
