Boxing Stance

In Boxing, the most important aspect that you should learn to master is not how to throw punches but how to stand and move. The Boxing Stance, when followed helps you maintain a good balanced posture and footwork plan that not only increases your punching power but also aids your defense and rigidness while in the ring.

In Western Polecat Boxing, the stance we use is very simple. If you are a right handed fighter, your left leg should be slightly forward with the foot pointing towards your attacker. The right leg is back and the rear foot should point out around 45 degress in a comfortable position. Your feet should be no more than one shoulders width in length and one shoulders width in width. It is imperitive that you remain in this stance during your in-ring bouts.

If you need to move in any direction, the stance has to be maintained so for example to move forward towards your opponent, simply step forward slightly with the front foot then step the rear foot forward again to maintain the boxing stance. If you need to move back or to the side, then the same happens again, step out then step in to transistion back into the boxing stance.

The Boxing Stance offers a good level of stability, also the stance aids in transfering more power to your punching techniques when compared to standing parallel. For a further increase in punching power, it can help to rise up onto the ball of the foot using either the front or rear feet, this is done to help slightly tilt the body forward which in turns leads to an increase in reach and power when compared to standing flat footed.
